UK: the immigration health surcharge for students

Most international students coming to the UK for more than six months pay the immigration health surcharge (IHS) as part of the visa application. It gives access to the National Health Service on broadly the same basis as UK residents.

The cost

Since 6 February 2024 the surcharge is £776 a year for students, their dependants and anyone under 18. The standard rate for most other visa holders is £1,035 a year. Part years are charged in halves: six months or less is charged at half the annual rate.

Paying it

The surcharge is paid online with the visa application, for the whole length of the visa. It is not a monthly bill and you cannot pay it later.

Private insurance does not exempt you

Holding private medical insurance does not mean you can skip the surcharge. Some students take out private cover as well, for faster access to some treatment, but it is an extra, not a replacement.

What it does not cover

The surcharge covers NHS treatment. Students pay the same charges as UK residents, such as prescription charges in England and charges for NHS dental treatment. It does not cover belongings, travel or treatment outside the UK.

Universities

The Universities DB UK pages list universities across the country, with a separate page for London.

This page is general information, last reviewed in October 2026. It is not advice, and rules change. Check the official source for your visa and your university's own guidance before you buy anything.
